An In Depth Look At SIAMESE CATS

The exotic and somewhat mysterious Siamese cat hails from the country of Thailand.  They had always been a popular breed of cats, some even residing in royal palaces.  Siamese cats, in the past, were trusted to protect royal palaces and monasteries from evil spirits.  These cats were also thought of as bringing good fortune to their owners as well.

During the year of 1884, the very first Siamese cats began to make their way to England, when they were given as gifts to a British general.  After that, they eventually made their way over to America.  Nowadays, Siamese cats are one of the most recognized of the breed.  Siamese cats are without a doubt the most popular short haired cat and among the top 3 in the entire breed of cats.

Even though there are several different colors to this breed, some questions what makes a cat a true Siamese cat.  These cats have always been known for their bodies which are lighter in color, with darker areas throughout.  The darker areas found on their bodies are normally around the feet, tail, legs, or face.  They can weight anywhere between 6 - 16 lbs, with bright eyes that are normally slanted - which is another clue that the cat is a true Siamese.

Traditionally, Siamese cats are robust, with round heads and a truly muscular build.  They are well known throughout the world for their color points and unique personalities.  Unlike other breeds, Siamese breeds have a talent for communicating with people.  If you are looking for a cat that is nice and quiet, you wouldn’t want a Siamese cat.  These cats love to play, love to make noise, and they also happen to be the most social breed of cats out there.

Siamese cats demand a lot of attention because, in their minds, they believe that the world revolves around them.  For this very reason, they can tend to be quite a dependant on their owners.  They love to play and crave interaction.  If you leave them alone for too long, they won’t like it.  They like to get attention, love to play, and hate to be left by themselves.

Even though Siamese cats are emotionally high maintenance, they don’t need a lot of maintenance They need a minimum amount of grooming, which involves bathing every once in a while, and brushing maybe once or twice a month.  If you like cats with minimal maintenance, Siamese cats are perfect.  Their hair is short to their skin, so a gentle brushing is all you need.  They can get sick, however, which is to be expected with any breed of cat.

Siamese cats have a lifespan that is similar to other breeds, which is normally around 15 - 20 years, sometimes even longer. As long as you feed him on a daily basis and take him to the vet for his regular checkups and shots, he will be around for years and years to come.  Most people who have their Siamese cat for over 10 years, find the cat to be more like a child than a pet.

No matter how you look at it, a Siamese cat is a great pet.  Although the Siamese breed does require a lot of attention, they are excellent pets that you can spend a lot of time with.  They are great for kids as well, simply because kids can spend a lot of time with them.  As long as you give your pet the attention he craves - he will be your lifelong friend for as long as you have him.

Fact Sheet: SIAMESE CAT

(Original Title: All About Siamese Cats)

The Flying Nun , uh , Cat !

Siamese cats are one of the most beloved breeds amongst cat lovers, and understandably so. There are many reasons to love a Siamese cat from their blue eyes peering through the dark patch on their face to their high level of intelligence and energy. From their history to their personality, Siamese cats are a very unique breed.

Breed History
Siamese cats originated in Thailand in the 14th century. At that time, they were reserved for the royal families who would then bestow them on visiting dignitaries. They first showed up in the United States sometime in the late 1800's. The first documented Siamese feline to show up in the United States was a gift to First Lady Lucy Hayes. In present-day, Siamese cats rank fifth in popularity in the United States according to the Cat Fancier's Association.

Basic Breed Information
Female Siamese cats usually end up weighing between six to ten pounds with a height of twenty-one inches, while males usually weigh between nine and fourteen pounds and grow to a height of twenty-three inches. Their trademark look includes a wedge-shaped head with deep blue eyes, sleek body, and large pointed ears. Their coat is also a trademark feature with a cream-colored torso and dark areas on the face, ears, and feet. This is caused by a mutated enzyme in the pigment. There are four official colors of the Siamese breed of cat as recognized by the Cat Fancier's Association. These colors include seal, chocolate, blue, and lilac. Blue and lilac are simply diluted versions of the seal and chocolate colors.

Siamese Cat Personality and Temperament
Although very social cats, they are not necessarily the best choice for a household with children. They are generally very dedicated and loyal to their owners and love to talk. Many cat owners say their Siamese will always tell them what is on their minds and are not shy about making their demands known.

Always playful and loving, the Siamese breed does not entail the normal aloof feline attitude. They are known as the eternal kitten; the cat that never grows up. They display a more social personality than other breeds, even in the presence of other domestic animals.

They are a joy to own and even more fun to watch as they play amongst themselves or with the other cat and dog residents with whom they live. Their high level of intelligence is one of their signature characteristics. Many Siamese cat owners report their cats are able to be trained to perform tricks and learn their names very quickly.

Common Medical Problems
Unfortunately, just like with all breeds of cats and dogs, the Siamese cat also has certain medical conditions to which it is genetically predisposed. Many people know about the cross-eyed and kink-tailed abnormalities inherent in the Siamese breed, but these problems have been all but completely eliminated through careful breeding. There are two problems, however, that are still present in the genetic code of this breed. These two problems are gingivitis and a liver-destroying disease called amyloidosis.

While gingivitis can be prevented through proper dental care, amyloidosis is a much more serious illness caused by abnormally high levels of amyloid deposited in the liver. Amyloid is a fibrous protein and when high levels are present in the liver, it can cause hemorrhaging and renal failure. Symptoms include yellowing of the skin or eyes, vomiting, lack of energy, enlarged abdomen, anorexia, and excessive thirst in the presence of excessive urination.

Siamese Cat Rescue
After hearing about all the wonderful characteristics inherent in the Siamese breed of cat, chances are you are wondering where you can get one of your own. There are rescue coalitions that specialize in the rescue, care, and adoption of Siamese cats. One such organization is called Texas Siamese Rescue and is based out of Dallas, Texas.

To adopt a Siamese cat through this organization a fee of between $100 and $175 will be charged to partially cover the plethora of veterinarian services and tests this particular adoption center requires for each feline that moves through their facility.

The Siamese is by far one of the most intelligent and fun-loving cat breeds around. It is no wonder they are favorites among cat lovers.

SIAMESE CATS - Do You Really Want One?

Are you ready and able to welcome Siamese cats into your heart and home?

Where should you start?

With personality plus. Siamese cats can be high maintenance, more so than most house cats. Don’t let this put you off, because when it comes to pure breeds, they are no higher maintenance. In fact, they are a lot less trouble than some of the long haired breeds like the Persian cat, which requires brushing and combing every day.

Siamese Cat
What does ‘high maintenance’ mean? Unlike the Persian cat, Siamese cats have a close short coat and although many like a brush they can look after their own coats. This also applies to the long-haired Siamese, called the Balinese or Javanese – they have an easy to manage longer silky coat.

Where they do require more attention is in the mental and psychological area. Without that attention, they will become unhappy, and an unhappy Siamese cat spells trouble. Picture this: shredded furniture and curtains, territory marking and self harming by pulling out their own fur, just for starters.

How does this affect your decision to buy that most tempting, cute and naughty Siamese kitten bundle?

If you are out of the house for hours on end, plan on either more than one Siamese or make real efforts to keep your cat entertained: that means special toys, treats hidden around the house, or special sleeping places by the window.

When you come home, plan on spending some quality time together. It will allow you to re-bond and your cat will forget your time apart.

Another option is a Balinese or Javanese, which also belong to the family of Siamese cats. Some breeders say that with a Balinese or Javanese, you get the character of a Siamese, but generally a more easy-going nature. If you plan on being at work all day, you might consider the longer-haired Balinese over the standard Siamese.

Take some time to think about what you want from your cat.

If the idea of a cat always hanging around, wanting attention, and mewling loudly with that piercing Siamese voice gets on your nerves even as you read this, then this truly might not be the best choice for you.

Do you have a hectic family life? Do you really have the time, energy and inclination to take care of the emotional needs of your Siamese? Remember, a lonely and ignored Siamese will be anti-social and get on your nerves even more – and that’s a cruel thing.

Finally all cats cost money, vet bills, food and boarding costs soon add up. It would be so sad to end up having to give your cat away because you could not afford to keep it. If your job takes you away all the time having a Siamese is probably not a good idea. Take some time to think this through, before you buy your Siamese cat!

If you still think you can care and provide for this most special and striking of cats, then read on – because Siamese cats are truly different.

Most owners agree that Siamese cats are special. They look different, with their darker paws and faces and blue eyes. And they have such a distinctive voice – even those who don’t love cats can recognize a Siamese.

Siamese cats are on average more clever than most cats, although you can get exceptions.

You will be enchanted with their antics. While elegant in appearance, they can often be quite clumsy. Take care to bolt down all ornaments! Who knows – they may choose to be clumsy just to get your attention. They feel warmer than other cats when you cuddle them, and they love the heat. Those radiator beds are very popular in colder climates. And if you can provide them with the entertainment of a safe outdoor run they will love you for it.

Siamese cats cannot see as well as other cats at night though so watch that they don’t come to any harm. Nor are all Siamese noisy, though some can howl the house down. Make sure you have easy-going neighbors who don’t wonder why you’re torturing your cat!

If you have more than one Siamese you will probably see that unlike the more independent breeds they will love to sleep in a great heap together, another good reason for having more than one. Occasionally, like any other cat, they’ll take a dislike to their house mates and will never sleep close together, but this is rare.

Still fascinated by Siamese cats? Still convinced this is the perfect match for you?

That is good news, because a Siamese is truly a special friend.

A word of caution before you buy though: it’s the same for all breeds, you should choose your kitten carefully. To avoid heartache, do your research properly and buy from a reputable breeder. After all, the last thing you want is a sick or weak kitten.

Still not put off? Then you will be rewarded with a wonderful special relationship this breed is rightly known for.

SIAMESE CAT Information - The Good, Bad, and the Ugly

I love Siamese cats, but I will tell you the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth with honest Siamese cat information!

Wikipedia)
Lets start with the 'good' facts about Siamese.
Siamese can be loyal, obsessively loyal. Siamese are smart, although there is the occasional exception (or maybe it's just pretending) Siamese cats are often talkative; they seem to understand you even if they choose to be a little deaf at times. Siamese kittens and cats have character, no bland and boring snooze cat here. Siamese cats give and expect to receive. All the time.

A Siamese cat has an easy care coat so no long and expensive visits to the beauty parlor required. Others even appreciate having their nails done - a 'caticure of sorts'. You can even buy nail covers in some fun designer colors, great for the indoor Siamese and to protect your furniture.

Siamese are beautiful and a pleasure to watch. Certainly better than watching TV. This cat knows it is special and is happy to bestow some of its' special aura on a special person. Your Siamese will love to keep you company. And keep you company. And again. The Siamese kitten or cat loves heat more than most cats, preferably in your bed if they get half a chance.

Are you ready? The 'bad' Siamese Cat Facts
That Siamese loyalty may be more dog-like than a cat. Bad? If you are the kind of person who hates to be smothered, you might be better off with a less demonstrative bred. Siamese cats expect to help you write your great American novel (Chapter 1: kjf*&^%#^9ojn3o9iunf93). Don't expect to hide in the bathroom for a bit of peace and quiet - it's their favorite room, and anyway they refuse to be shut out. Period.

Siamese are clever. Don't expect your bright Siamese to wait for you to come home before being naughty. They need to keep that brain amused and if you don't leave them copious reading material or some good films about bird watching, your Siamese (even a Siamese kitten) will find amusement wherever they can. I have seen some amazing flower arrangements and indoor gardens created by a bored Siamese. Be prepared to spend time playing.

I have known many quiet Siamese, but when they are noisy, boy are they noisy! If you bring home a talkative version, meditation and mind over matter lessons might be in order.

When they are bad, they are very bad
The 'ugly' side of Siamese cats? Facts can be deceiving and no single Siamese is all bad - although some come close.

A jealous cat? Yes, so best not tease your Siamese or you'll be at the receiving end of sulks for as long as your cat chooses to punish you. To speed the forgiveness process little hors d'oeuvres might eventually be accepted. And please, never fuss over another cat when your Siamese is within earshot. Long after you have forgotten all about it an ambush of historic proportions will be mounted on the surprised rival for your affections.

So as not to embarrass my 'butter would not melt' writing companion I will stop here but I would be remiss if I did not briefly mention dodgy litter habits, a certain sneakiness, and a tendency towards Attilla the Hun-type dominance.

Please don't let these little details put you off. If this Siamese cat information hasn't put you off, then you may be one of the suitable and special people for whom a Siamese is a welcome addition to the family. I certainly couldn't be without one.
